Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

Age lines can be seen between the eyebrows, across the forehead, and sides of the eyes (crow’s feet).

Relaxing facial muscles can reduce and limit the size and progression of facial wrinkles for a more youthful look. Small amounts of anti-wrinkle injections over time provide these benefits and freshen the appearance. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smooths out and the lines begin to fade. Starting early is one of the best preventative strategies.

Treatment starts to take effect after about 4-7 days but it takes two weeks to see the full effect of treatment. A treatment usually lasts 3-4 months, sometimes longer with consistent treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who will perform the treatment?
Irish regulations only permit Injections of botulinum toxin by a registered medical doctor or dentist who is trained to administer this medication safely and who has a thorough understanding of human facial anatomy and can manage unexpected or adverse effects.

All treatments with Botulinum toxin are provided by a registered doctor at Swinford Medical Centre.

Will my friends know I had anti-wrinkle injections?
A good result with botulinum toxin should be subtle and leave you looking fresher and more relaxed but retaining the ability to make normal facial expressions and avoiding an unnatural or “frozen” look. That's why it's important to be treated by an experienced practitioner who is conservative in their approach and individualises your treatment.

How does it work?
Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily blocking the nerves to selected facial muscles so that they cannot pull on the overlying skin. This reduces and limits the size and depth of facial wrinkles for a more youthful look. Over time, and consecutive treatments, the skin surface gradually smooths out and the lines begin to fade.

How long does the treatment take?

The doctor will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate anti-wrinkle regimen for you. The actual injection process takes about 5 to 15 minutes.

Does it hurt?
Patients report that being injected with anti-wrinkle injections feels like a pinch. Topical numbing cream can be applied before administering your treatment.

When will I see results, how long will effects last?
Some begin to notice results within 48 to 72 hours with full effect at 2 weeks. The effect typically lasts 3-4 months, sometimes longer with consistent treatment. It is better to wait until the effects of your previous treatment are almost gone before your next treatment so that you don't develop a "frozen" look.

Do anti-wrinkle injections prevent wrinkles?
Anti-wrinkle injections are being used more frequently by people in their late 20s and 30s who are trying to prevent fine lines becoming etched into the skin. The theory is that by starting earlier, people, and their muscles, can learn not to make certain expressions that contribute to worsening their lines.

What are the risks?
Side effects may include minor bruising, brief bleeding, discomfort at the injection sites, headache and eyelid swelling. Drooping eyelids can occur in 2-5%. Over-injecting or injecting too low on the forehead can also cause brows to droop creating a heavy look - this can't be reversed - you have to wait until the anti-wrinkle injections wear off. True allergic reactions are extremely rare, almost unknown.
